Glossary/Public & Private Keys

Public & Private Keys

A cryptographic keypair where the public key identifies an account and the private key proves ownership by signing transactions. The private key must never be shared.

The public key (or address) is safe to share — it is how people pay you. The private key signs transactions; whoever holds it spends your funds. Wallets exist mainly to manage and protect these keys.
