Proof of Work (PoW)

A consensus algorithm used in blockchain networks where miners compete to solve a complex mathematical problem first. It is used to validate transactions and produce new blocks to the chain.

PoW makes attacking the network expensive: rewriting history requires redoing the computational work faster than all honest miners combined. Bitcoin popularized it; its main criticism is high energy consumption.
