Proof of Stake (PoS)

An alternative to PoW, where validators are chosen to create a new block based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold and are willing to "stake" as collateral.

PoS validators propose and attest to blocks; misbehavior can be punished by slashing their stake. Ethereum switched to PoS in 2022, cutting its energy use by over 99%.
