Glossary/Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA)

Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA)

The model of consensus employed by the SCP, which requires nodes to only trust a subset of the overall network. This model strikes a balance between decentralization and efficiency.

In FBA there is no fixed validator list chosen by anyone: each node picks its own trusted quorum slices, and safety emerges where those slices overlap. This is what lets Stellar finalize transactions in about five seconds.
