Glossary/Distributed Ledger

Distributed Ledger

A database that is shared and synchronized across multiple nodes or locations, with no central administrator. Blockchains are a type of distributed ledger.

Every participant holds a consistent copy and protocol rules decide what gets written. Blockchains order entries into blocks; other designs (like hashgraphs or directed acyclic graphs) order them differently.
