Olvis Gil · October 31, 2026 · 8 min readVarial, MetaMask, and Albedo are all non-custodial crypto wallets — but they serve different networks. Picking between them is less about which is "best" and more about which blockchain you actually use. Here is the honest breakdown.
Freighter rebranded to Varial (varialwallet.com) — same Stellar wallet, same accounts, new name. Varial is a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave that handles XLM and all Stellar assets: trustlines, DEX swaps, Soroban dApp signing, and Ledger support. If you use Stellar, this is the default recommendation. Our setup guide walks through it step by step.
MetaMask is the dominant wallet for Ethereum and every EVM-compatible chain — Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, BSC, and the rest. It manages ERC-20 tokens, connects to virtually every EVM dApp, and supports hardware wallets. It does not support Stellar — XLM is not an EVM asset. If your work is Ethereum/EVM, this is the wallet; see ourEthereum hub.
Albedo is a browser-based Stellar key manager — no extension needed, you log in via the web and it signs transactions for dApps that integrate it. It is thinner than Varial (no full asset management UI) but convenient for web apps and multisig-style flows. Many Stellar users keep Varial as their main wallet and use Albedo where apps request it.
Stellar? Varial for daily use, Albedo as a complement. Ethereum/EVM?MetaMask. Most serious users end up with both ecosystems — Varial plus MetaMask covers essentially everything. Whichever you choose: it is non-custodial, so your seed phrase is your only backup. Read ourwallet security guide before moving real funds.
